Day 1

Lower East Side & Chinatown

9:00 AM
Breakfast

Russ & Daughters

179 E Houston St
OrderEverything bagel with Nova lox, cream cheese, capers, red onion

Go early to avoid the weekend line. This is the best bagel-and-lox in the city.

12:30 PM
Lunch

Katz's Delicatessen

205 E Houston St
OrderPastrami on rye, hand-carved, mustard only

Get a ticket at the door. Tip your carver. Ask for a taste before they build the sandwich.

3:00 PM
Snack

Nom Wah Tea Parlor

13 Doyers St, Chinatown
OrderEgg tarts, shrimp rice noodle rolls

Walk south from the LES into Chinatown. Doyers St is a historic curved street — worth the detour.

7:00 PM
Dinner

Joe's Shanghai

9 Pell St, Chinatown
OrderPork soup dumplings, scallion pancake, braised pork belly

Arrive before 7pm to avoid the longest waits. Communal seating is normal here.

Day 2

Greenwich Village & Chelsea

9:30 AM
Breakfast

Murray's Bagels

500 6th Ave, Greenwich Village
OrderPlain bagel with plain cream cheese

They do not toast here. This is a philosophical position. The bagel is good enough that it does not need it.

12:00 PM
Lunch

Joe's Pizza

7 Carmine St, Greenwich Village
OrderOne plain slice, eat standing at the counter

Fold the slice lengthwise before the first bite. This is not optional.

3:30 PM
Snack

Dominique Ansel Bakery

189 Spring St, SoHo
OrderThe Cronut (flavor changes monthly)

Walk north through SoHo. Arrive by 3:30pm — they sell out daily.

6:30 PM
Dinner

The Lobster Place (Chelsea Market)

75 9th Ave, Chelsea
OrderCold Maine lobster roll with mayo and lemon

Chelsea Market is worth exploring for 30 minutes before dinner. The Lobster Place is at the west end of the market.

Day 3

Brooklyn & Uptown

10:00 AM
Breakfast

Junior's Restaurant

386 Flatbush Ave Ext, Downtown Brooklyn
OrderOriginal plain cheesecake, coffee

Take the B or Q to DeKalb Ave. The Brooklyn original is worth the trip. The Times Square location is convenient but not the same experience.

1:00 PM
Lunch

Di Fara Pizza

1424 Avenue J, Midwood, Brooklyn
OrderRegular slice with fresh basil

This is a 45-minute subway ride from Midtown. It is worth it. The slice is cut with scissors and finished with fresh basil and olive oil.

4:00 PM
Snack

Gray's Papaya

2090 Broadway, Upper West Side
OrderTwo hot dogs with mustard and sauerkraut, one papaya drink

Take the subway back to Manhattan. Gray's Papaya is open 24 hours. The Recession Special is still one of the best value meals in the city.

7:30 PM
Dinner

Peter Luger Steak House

178 Broadway, Williamsburg, Brooklyn
OrderPorterhouse for two, medium rare, German fried potatoes

Cash only — bring it. Make a reservation weeks in advance. This is the splurge meal of the trip.
