Neighborhood Guide
Greenwich Village
The neighborhood that invented the New York food scene.
Greenwich Village has been a food destination since the 1950s. Joe's Pizza on Carmine Street is the benchmark for the New York slice. Murray's Cheese on 6th Avenue is one of the best cheese shops in the country. Bleecker Street is lined with Italian bakeries and specialty food shops. The Village is walkable, dense, and full of places that have been doing the same thing well for decades.
Joe's Pizza
The benchmark for the New York slice since 1975. Thin crust, blistered undercarriage, cheese that pulls to your elbow. Fold it lengthwise before the first bite. This is not optional.
Murray's Bagels
Hand-rolled and boiled before baking — the traditional method. They do not toast here. This is a philosophical position, not an oversight. The bagel is good enough that it does not need it.
Murray's Cheese
One of the best cheese shops in the United States. The staff know the provenance of every cheese in the case. The tasting boards are generous. The cave-aged selections change seasonally.
Bleecker Street Pizza
A strong alternative to Joe's for those who want a slightly more upscale slice. The Nonna Maria — fresh mozzarella, San Marzano tomatoes, fresh basil — is the one to order.
